Financial crime has moved onto digital platforms and across borders. We follow it there.
Portfolio Highlight
Financial crimes have evolved and funds now leave an organisation through a payment platform and arrive as a token on a chain in another jurisdiction within minutes. Investigating that requires different capabilities: traditional investigative capabilities and blockchain analytics. As part of our Financial Crimes, Digital Assets and Investigations services, we run these combined capabilities as a single practice.
On one side we investigate suspicious fraud and protect organisational integrity, from screening the people (insiders) and third parties you depend on, through insider-threat risk management to formal investigations in response to a recorded fraud or breach. On the other side, our digital and virtual assets practice traces funds across blockchains and exchanges, supports recovery through the appropriate legal and exchange channels, guides virtual asset service providers through licensing and AML/CFT compliance, and assesses the security of crypto, custody and exchange infrastructure.
Our practice makes this a cross-border discipline by default, and we work with our partners to conduct this service. We build the investigative record so that it is usable in any of the jurisdictions of our operations.
Banks, Fintechs, other payment institutions and mobile-money operators with mandatory AML/CFT obligations. Virtual asset service providers seeking or holding a licence. Institutions responding to suspected fraud, including insider fraud. Businesses, insurers and investors assessing counterparty or third-party integrity. Institutions which require pre-employment background checks. Law enforcement and regulatory bodies requiring specialist tracing capabilities and support. Legal and compliance teams running privileged internal investigations, and institutional victims of virtual asset theft. Development partners supporting capacity building in virtual assets and related areas.
Investigations are scoped against the intended purpose: a disciplinary outcome, a regulatory decision, a recovery action, a transaction, or in support of criminal or civil actions. That determines the evidential standard we set for our investigations.
Fieldwork combines documentary and open-source analysis, interviews conducted lawfully and on the record, digital forensic acquisition where devices are relevant, and financial and transactional analysis. Chain analysis uses licensed commercial tooling alongside the Bureau’s methodology, with attribution established based on the available evidence backed by an explicit confidence level rather than assumptions. We work within data protection and employment law in each of our jurisdictions of operations, coordinate with legal counsel where appropriate, and act with discretion where the matter under investigation is sensitive. Reporting distinguishes clearly between what is evidenced, what is inferred, and what remains open. All services delivered under this portfolio begin with an engagement with our clients to understand their needs, anticipated outcomes, and timelines whilst establishing a common understanding for our engagements.
